    Job Description

    THE CITY

    The City

    Culver City is a Charter City incorporated in 1917, and is a destination filled with outdoor cafes, unique shops, and galleries opening onto pedestrian-friendly boulevards. Culver City has a dedicated staff of approximately 800+ employees with an overall operating budget of over $325 million. The City provides a full range of municipal services, including Fire, Police, Community Development, Public Works, Parks, Recreation, Community Services, and Transportation.

    THE POSITION

    Police Records Technician
    (Full-Time, Benefited)

    GENERAL DUTIES:
    • Maintains crime, arrest, and incident report files.
    • Ensures such records are properly organized and keeps filing up to date using the Police Department's filing system.
    • Checks documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with legal and other requirements.
    • Accepts walk-in requests for reports or information, and courteously and tactfully assists the public.
    • Enters and retrieves information and data from law enforcement teletype and computer terminals.
    • Inputs data into the teletype and computer terminal.
    • Operates other office equipment such as fax, word processor and the accompanying printer.
    • Retrieves, assembles, and disseminates reports and information from the files in an accurate and timely basis for Departmental staff.
    • Understands and is able to correctly use the filing system to respond to requests for reports and information.
    • Prepares criminal statistical reports required by the Police Department consistent with established deadlines.
    • Classifies incoming crime reports in accordance with the Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Reporting Criteria.
    • Processes fingerprint cards.
    • Receives, verifies, and accounts for money for bail and for reproducing police reports with extreme care and accuracy.
    • Police Records Technicians may be required to assist jail staff with female prisoners by observing jail checks, strip searches, and female arrestees during transportation.
    • Performs other related duties.


    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
    • High school graduation or equivalent and;
    • One (1) year of clerical experience and;
    • Must be able to type 35 WPM.

    EXAMINATION PROCEDURES

    Applicants must receive a passing score on all examination components to be placed on the eligible list.

    EXAMINATION COMPONENTS
    • Typing Test Assessment (Qualifying): To assess the ability to type the required words per minute. (Culver City will not administer a typing test; you must submit a certificate as proof of typing requirement with the application. Self-administered typing assessments will not be accepted. For more information, refer to the following linked document ).
    • Written Exam (Weighted at 50%): The written exam will assess knowledge of administrative skills, including reading comprehension, communication, and customer service. (Tentatively scheduled for the week of July 21, 2025).
    • Oral Appraisal Interview (Weighted at 50%): Candidates who successfully pass the written exam will be invited to participate in the oral appraisal interview. The oral appraisal interview is designed to evaluate training, experience, and personal qualifications. (Tentatively scheduled for the week of August 11, 2025).

    Background Process (Qualifying):
    Background Investigation & Polygraph: To determine suitability for the position. Psychological Screening & Medical Evaluation: Standard exams to determine suitability.
