    The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department (PWFP) brings together a range of functions to ensure safe building construction, plan for the future needs of the County, manage infrastructure and county facilities, and protect natural resources. The Department is responsible for public works, county roads and bridges, county parks, and county facilities.

    The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department is in immediate need for a Sanitation Worker Assistant. Under supervision, the Sanitation Worker Assistant learns, assists, and performs a wide variety of tasks associated with the maintenance and repair of pump stations, sewer lines, and other sanitary sewer collection system appurtenant structures, and performs other related work as required.

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis County-wide.

    Examples of Duties

    • Checks, rods, and cleans sewer lines utilizing power operated cleaning equipment
    • Uses hand and power tools and equipment to excavate, repair, or replace broken sewer lines, and appurtenant structures
    • Performs routine maintenance on pump stations; makes simple repairs and performs routine service of pumps, motors and other related equipment; assists in pump and motor overhauls
    • Services and maintains wastewater meters and injection systems
    • Learns to take routine wastewater samples and perform basic laboratory tests
    • Reads and records information from meters and dials
    • Assists in raising manhole covers and other structures to finish grade
    • Performs buildings and grounds maintenance at sanitation facilities

    THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    Some Knowledge of:
    • Methods and procedures used to clean and repair sewer lines
    • Hand and power tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair of sewer lines
    Skill and Ability to:
    • Perform heavy physical labor requiring strength, dexterity and agility
    • Operate a vehicle safely
    • Learn the operation of specialized sanitation cleaning equipment
    • Learn and assist with sanitation collection systems operation, maintenance and repair
    • Maintain records accurately and neatly
    • Learn safety practices related to sanitation
    • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
    • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others


    Examples of Experience/Education/Training

    Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

    Experience: One year of experience as construction or maintenance laborer or truck driver which included work of the type done in sanitation collection system maintenance and repair.

    REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency; travel out of County to attend meetings.
    • Possess a valid California Class C driver license at the time of appointment and possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record or provide evidence of suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
    • Be willing to wear self-contained breathing apparatus during prescribed working situations and during emergencies.
    • Obtain a CPR and First Aid Certificate within nine months of appointment.
    • Maintain good driving record and habits.
