NATURE OF WORK: Performs professional work coordinating the delivery of employment readiness training and career exploration programming activities to prepare youth ages fifteen through twenty five (15-25) for employment opportunities. An employee assigned to this classification cultivates partnerships with local businesses/organizations to place participants in paid internship/certification/employment opportunities. Responsible for recruiting program participants, providing access to support services as needed, and conducting a five (5) week employment readiness training program. Once training is complete, participants are placed in a ten (10) week paid internship within a career field of interest. Program participants are monitored for up to ninety (90) days to ensure they continue to work toward employment goals and successful completion of the internship program and assist with the transition into stable employment. An employee assigned to this classification ensures compliance with all grants, funding sources, and record keeping. The employee may be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Leu Gardens, reporting directly to the Executive Director. The Horticulture Manager leads a 12-person team of experienced horticulture staff, contractors, and volunteers to achieve excellent horticultural development, design, and care for the Gardens botanical displays and collections of plant material, trees, turf, greenhouse production, infrastructure, hardscape, and all related buildings, equipment, and garden spaces. Working with the Executive Director, this position develops and creates collaborative horticulture exhibits, displays, and activities to attract new and diverse audiences; develops annual horticultural plans and participates in gardens-wide master site planning; collaborates with the department team leaders and provides leadership and management for a 12-person horticultural team; establishes and implements horticultural standards, best and sustainable practices of garden care and maintenance; works with the public; assists in preparing and maintaining the annual horticultural budget; works with the Gardens leadership team to help guide the strategic direction, promote, and share success for the Gardens; works with community organizations, plant society partners, academic, social, and civic groups to create garden opportunities and partnerships; ensures the safety and security of staff and public through training and certifications to handle horticultural materials (i.e., fertilizer and chemicals). Employees assigned to this classification receives, screens, and dispatches emergency and non-emergency calls for fire, emergency medical services, and aircraft emergencies provide medical advice; and prepare various reports. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with departmental procedures. Employees must exercise initiative and independent judgement to properly react and respond appropriately under very stressful conditions. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through direct observation, audit of tapes, and supervisory meetings to ensure compliance with policy and procedures and established standards. WORK SCHEDULE: Will vary and will rotate through the first year of employment and includes midnights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to work additional hours with little or no notice based on operational needs.
