Job Description

Position: Assistant Professor of Geography
Effective Date: August 19, 2024 (Fall semester)
Salary Range: The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary is $5,405 to $11,994/per month (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $6,667 to $7,084/per month. Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Geography or related field with specialization in Remote Sensing. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1,2024.
  • Demonstrated or potential ability for effective teaching at undergraduate and graduate-level courses
  • Demonstrated or potential ability to generate funding for applied research and student support
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Specialization in two or more of the following areas: Small Unoccupied Aerial Systems (sUAS) data collection and analysis, orbital and suborbital image analysis and interpretation, spatial statistics, data analytics, pixel and object-based image analysis and feature extraction, fluency in R and/or Python, applied field experience.
  • Successful grant-seeking record with established ties to research institutions, industry, or government agencies
  • Experience of successfully working with populations demographically and socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body ( demographics )

Duties:
  • Teach lower and upper division courses in our geography and environmental science and policy programs, and at the graduate level in both our Master of Arts and Master of Science in Geographic Information Science degree programs. Specific teaching assignments may include classes in remote sensing, digital image processing, programming, geospatial databases, multi-variate and/or spatial statistics, general education courses or other specialty courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
  • Engage undergraduate and graduate students in scholarly activities
  • Seek opportunities for extramurally funded research programs
  • Develop and engage in ongoing research, scholarly and creative activities leading presentations and publications
  • Collaborate in curriculum development
  • Mentor and advise students
  • Contribute to shared governance by serving on committees
  • Engage in discipline-related professional activities.
  • Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community
