Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is an approach that promotes walking and bicycling to school through infrastructure improvements, enforcement, tools, safety education, and incentives to encourage walking and bicycling to school. SRTS initiatives improve safety and levels of physical activity for students. Wake County Health and Human Services’ (WCHHS) houses the SRTS program in Wake County to improve the physical health of the community and decrease unintentional injuries by preventing motor vehicle crashes with child pedestrians and bicyclists. SRTS evidenced-based programs can increase physical activity levels and set children up for a lifetime of being active, and research has shown that physical activity is essential to overall health.

The Safe Routes to School Coordinator job responsibilities include:
  • Assess and monitor Safe Routes to School-related activities in Wake County
  • Identify data collection needs and collect appropriate data and use it to prioritize schools and target interventions
  • Evaluate projects and programs by soliciting continuous feedback to inform ongoing development
  • Develop annual work/action plan to guide grant activities in compliance with grant requirements
  • Identify evidence-based and emerging interventions to increase walking and biking to school, prevent injuries, and increase physical activity
  • Implement evidence-based and emerging interventions with prioritized schools and partners
  • Identify opportunities for policy, systems, and environmental change to increase walking and biking to school, prevent injuries, and increase physical activity
  • Identify, build, and maintain relationships with relevant partners, including the school district, individual schools, municipal governments, and community groups
  • Facilitate collaboration with and between partners to support implementation of evidence-based and emerging interventions
  • Coordinate and submit applications for funding and comply with all grant reporting requirements, including work/action plan development
  • Manage budget by tracking and spending funds in compliance with grant requirements, including submitting regular invoices to funder
  • Participate in required meetings and trainings

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two years of job-related experience
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted


Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Experience working with schools systems, PTAs and municipal planners around transportation safety.
