General

The Web Accessibility Specialist (ADA) works under the direct supervision of the Senior Web Developer and is responsible for ensuring compliance with Section 508 (75%) updating and maintaining district websites using Drupal (25%) for the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans), Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain), the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA), and the San Mateo County Transit District (SMCTD).

Essential Functions & Duties

  • Review and ensure all internal and public-facing web district materials developed are 508 compliant and adhere to the latest WCAG guidelines (Level A & AA conformance and subject to change based on WCAG updates).
  • Conduct technical editing, quality assurance, testing, and support for remediation of current deliverables, such as documents, intricate spreadsheets, websites, among others, to satisfy 508 compliance.
  • Provide comprehensive accessibility reporting that successfully passes all of the Section 508 checklist requirements.
  • Update and maintain web content in the Content Management System.
Examples of Duties
  • Provide section 508 compliance versions for PDF, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, campaign materials, training modules, and websites.
  • Fix documents that cannot be processed by OCR software.
  • Use the Adobe Acrobat Pro, Common Look, Web Accessibility Tool (WAT), and/or Site Improve to perform 508 compliance testing.
  • Remediate documents within the deadline given by the supervisor.
  • Efficiently identify non-compliant sections within documents, forms, and web content with precision.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect one’s self, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Perform other duties assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:
  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology.
  • Three (3) years of experience in 508 compliance, website content management, and document systems (ie. SharePoint, intranet system, et.).
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS & Javascript (JQuery).
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Experience using Illustrator and InDesign.
  • Experience using Drupal or a closely related field.
