THE CITY

Culver City is a Charter City incorporated in 1917, and is a destination filled with outdoor cafes, unique shops and galleries opening onto pedestrian-friendly boulevards. Culver City has a dedicated staff of approximately 800+ employees with an overall operating budget of over $325 million. The City provides a full range of municipal services including Fire, Police, Community Development, Public Works, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services, and Transportation.

THE DEPARTMENT:
The
Police Department has a complement of just over 100 sworn and 48 civilian personnel serving a residential population of 40,000 and an estimated daily commercial population of over 200,000

THE POSITION

Police Recruit (Entry Level) and

Police Officer Recruit (Pre-Service/Academy Graduate)

(FULL-TIME, BENEFITED)
The incumbent in this non-sworn, at-will civilian classification attends a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified police academy to receive education and training in all aspects of law enforcement such as laws of arrest, search and seizure, crime prevention, community relations, first-aid, physical conditioning, self-defense, handling of weapons and other related duties. Upon graduation from the academy, the Police Recruit is sworn in as a Police Officer and assumes the duties of that position.

We are recruiting to fill vacancies for the following classifications listed below. You can qualify for only one of the noted classifications:
  • Police Recruit (Entry Level)
  • Police Officer Recruit (Pre-Service/Academy Graduate) - academy attendee or graduate
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
  • Applicants must be at least 20 1/2 years of age when the eligible list is established.
  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver license is required at time of appointment (hire).
  • A felony conviction is disqualifying.
Police Recruit: Must meet the above minimum requirements.
Police Officer Recruit (Pre-Service/Academy Grad): Must meet the above minimum requirements, PLUS the following:
  • Academy attendee must be currently enrolled in a California POST Basic Academy ( Documentation from the academy verifying current enrollment must be submitted with application ) OR
  • Academy graduate must have completed a California POST Basic Academy within twelve (12) months of application filing deadline date (Copy of a California POST Basic Academy completion certificate must be submitted with application ).
Salary/Benefits:
The City offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The monthly salary range for Police Officer is $7,308.90 - $9,555.74. A top step police officer in possession of an Advanced POST Certificate can earn up to $134,735.88 . Applicants for Police Recruit are hired as an at-will civilian, until successful completion of the police academy, at which time the recruit is sworn in as a Police Officer. Applicants must receive a passing score on all examination components to be placed on the eligible list.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURES

  • Physical Agility (Qualifying): Timed event measuring ability to perform the physical activities required of a Police Officer (Tentatively scheduled for the week of August 5, 2024).
  • Written Test (Qualifying): To measure reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. Note: written test will be waived for candidates who have taken the POST written exam within six (6) months of application deadline date. A minimum T-score of 42 may be deemed qualifying (Tentatively scheduled for the week of August 5, 2024).
  • Oral Appraisal Interview (Weighted at 100%): To evaluate training, experience and personal qualifications (Tentatively scheduled for the week of September 9, 2024).
  • Polygraph, Background Investigation (Qualifying): To determine suitability for the position of peace officer.
  • Psychological Screening & Medical Examination (Qualifying): Standard medical exam with a vision requirement of 20/100 or better without correction and 20/20 or better with correction - each eye.

Compensation: Base Pay $83,157.88-$108,721.60 (Top Step) Annually
*A top step police officer in possession of an Advanced Post Certificate can earn $133,183.96. This does not include the Special Assignment Pay, Uniform Allowance and Wellness benefit.

·POST CERTIFICATION: 14.5% for Intermediate Post and 17.5% for Advanced Post;
·LONGEVITY PAY: (Annually) $7,000 at 10 years, $10,000 at 15 years, $17,000 at 20 years and $19,000 at 25 years;
·BILINGUAL PAY: 5% above base hourly rate PLUS POST certificate pay;
·SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT PAY: (All members receive) 8% above base hourly rate PLUS POST certificate pay;
·FIELD TRAINING OFFICER PAY: 8% above base hourly rate PLUS POST certificate
pay;
·RANGEMASTER PAY: 7% above base hourly rate PLUS POST certificate pay;
·Uniform Allowance: $1,600 annually
·Wellness Benefit: $450 annually
·RETIREMENT: Membership in CalPERS (Public Employees Retirement System)
retirement plan -3% at 55 for "Classic" members or 2.7% at 57 for "new" PERS
members. (May be eligible to purchase up to 4 years military credit);
·DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Employees may voluntarily contribute to a city
sponsored deferred compensation plan;
