  • Master’s degree may substitute for experience up to two (2) years.

POSITION OVERVIEW :
The City of Austin Watershed Protection Department is looking for an environmental educator to assist with community engagement, teaching our Earth Camp program for 5th graders (www.austintexas.gov/earthcamp), and teaching or assisting with our other youth education programs (www.austintexas.gov/watershed/YouthEd) and community/outreach events. This position will involve communicating project and program information to internal and external customers, interpreting and developing educational materials, and assisting in the development of short-and long-range plans for projects and programs. Essential duties involve teaching students and the public about watersheds, the Edwards Aquifer, flood safety, and actions people can take to improve water quality in our creeks and springs; communicating with priority stakeholders; gathering input from the community; providing information and resources to the community; managing education/outreach materials; driving to various sites around Austin; and representing the Department at community events.

EDUCATION :
Verification of education will be conducted on the top candidate.

Job Offer is contingent on passing a Criminal Background Investigation.

TRAVEL :
If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Pay Range
$23.76 - $27.56

Hours
20 hours per week, Monday-Friday, often between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., with the ability to telework (up to 50% of time worked within a two-week period when available) after initial training period. Exceptions may apply subject to the business needs of the department. May require working outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends as dictated by program needs.

Preferred Experience:
  • Teaching experience (as a formal or informal educator).
  • Experience in community engagement.
  • Knowledge about environmental science, particularly related to aquifers, watersheds, and water quality.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Communicates project and program information to internal and external customers; through presentations, reports, tours, instructional videos and/or technical training. Compiles, analyzes, interprets and develops informational and/or educational materials. Prepare necessary reports and/or documents for support of project/program. Maintains technical currency and awareness of internal/external business issues at it relates to area of responsibility. Represents Department/Division by interacting with various boards, commissions, special interest groups, outside organizations and other City Departments/Divisions. Trains, coordinates and supervises the work of volunteers. Responds to requests from the media Evaluates projects, programs and performance measures/criteria. Assists in the development of short and long range plans for projects and programs. Reviews and interprets policies, codes, regulations and ordinances. Assists in the development of departmental/divisional processes and procedures.
