The Fresno County Department of Agriculture is offering exciting employment opportunities for individuals interested in contributing to Fresno County's agricultural industry as an Agricultural Technician - Seasonal (Extra-Help).

Agricultural Technicians play a key role in Fresno County's agriculture industry by performing standardization and other inspections on seasonal agricultural commodities in order to protect the consumer, the environment, and the industry. Note : Temporary (extra-help) employees are paid an hourly rate for actual hours worked, are not entitled to benefits, do no obtain permanent status and serve at the will of the department head.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

Minimum Qualifications Applicants must qualify under one (1) of the options listed below:

OPTION 1 :
Education : Completion of twelve (12) semester units of coursework in agricultural, life, or physical sciences that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.

OPTION 2 :
Experience : One (1) year of full-time, paid work experience in agriculture or farming.

In addition to the options listed above, the following is also required:

License : Must obtain one (1) valid Seasonal Agricultural Inspector license, issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, necessary to inspect a specific seasonal agricultural commodity in Fresno County, as determined by the Department of Agriculture, within two (2) weeks from the date of hire.

License : Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.

SELECTION PROCESS :

Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:
  • Certification Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination.
  • Online Examination - If required, the examination will be offered in an online format. Please indicate on the supplemental questionnaire if you have the ability to complete an online examination.
  • Oral Examination -An oral examination includes a panel consisting of at least two members within a similar field of expertise as the vacancy. Candidates are asked structured questions and must respond orally to allow the panel to evaluate the specific qualifications of each applicant.
    • If required, the oral examination will be administered in an online format via the Spark Hire platform.
Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to an additional 12 months), and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
