Job Description

Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Associate Director, IT Services, User Support, the Learning Environments Support Technician provides classroom support to faculty and college IT staff. The Support Technician contributes to the construction, maintenance, and support of instructional technology systems, and assists with day-to-day operations of the equipment loan service. The position also contributes to video conferencing, special events, and evening support as needed.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work hours are Monday-Thursday 1:00pm-10:00pm and Friday 10:00am-4:30pm. During the Summer and Winter breaks, work hours will be Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The mission of the Information Technology Division is to develop the long-term infrastructure, services, and strategy necessary to support the University’s mission of learning, discovery, and engagement. The IT Division has the stewardship responsibility for core IT assets on campus and the obligation to provide the services, training, and community building necessary to realize the benefits of those investments across the San Diego State University community.

IT Services, User Support combines technical expertise, customer service, and proactive problem-solving to enhance the overall technology experience for the SDSU community. This includes help desk operations, desktop services, and designing and maintaining effective learning environments. The IT Division is made up of 184 staff and 28 administrators.

Education and Experience

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Key Qualifications
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of a broad range of audio and video equipment, including distribution and projection systems.
  • Experience with the design, fabrication, and retrofitting of Smart Classroom or classroom audiovisual systems.
  • Experience evaluating and recommending audiovisual equipment for Smart Classroom or classroom systems.
  • Experience providing academic technology support in a higher education setting.
  • Experience preparing diagrams and appropriate documentation (e.g. line drawings, floor plans, parts list, work plans) for Smart Classroom or classroom design and development projects

Licenses/Certifications Required
  • California driver’s license.
  • Certification of completion of driver safety training as required by CSU Office of Risk Management must be obtained as soon as possible after hire date.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,334 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,899 - $7,506 per month.
