    About the job:
    The City of Austin’s Transportation and Public Works Department ( TPW ) is seeking to fill an Associate Project Manager ( APM ) position in our Strategic Projects Division. This position would support the Our Future 35 (OF35) team to plan and design Austin’s Cap and Stitch Project from concept to detailed design.

    Under general supervision, this position performs responsible and professional work by planning, developing, and implementing project efforts that utilize solutions for one or more medium- to large-sized projects to support the Our Future 35 (OF35) team and Strategic Projects Division. This position serves as liaison with contractors, consultants, and departments.

    TPW’s Our Future 35 team will be responsible for planning, designing, and funding projects associated with the City’s Cap and Stitch Project. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of an interdisciplinary team to support the development of a large infrastructure project that includes coordination with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The APM will support those activities and coordinate with consultants on project development, oversee a Project Coordinator working on the inter- and intra- departmental components, and design constraints for specific projects. Both positions will help execute the strategic direction and aid in the Department’s successful delivery of high-need, time-critical milestones in service to the Department’s multimodal safety and mobility goals.

    Primary duties for this position will include coordinating with consultants and staff across TPW divisions on project development planning for OF35 included in the TxDOT Capital Express- Central (CapEx-C) I35 Highway Project. The position will support TPW leadership to understand design constraints along the I35 corridor, review the CapEx-C PS&E documents, and develop preferred design options with other TPW divisions, City departments, and project stakeholders, where applicable. The ideal candidate holds a comprehensive understanding of mobility, particularly multimodal mobility, and understands the nature of modal interactions within transportation networks. The candidate would have schematic design experience and understand roadway elements, appropriate dimensions for those elements, and appropriate intersection design.

    The ideal candidate would have sound skills in project management and delivery for transportation projects, being able to manage and efficiently deliver multiple projects at once. The candidate should also be capable of working in a bustling environment and communicating effectively with internal and external team members.

    The ideal candidates will be versatile transportation planning/engineering professionals and bring the following preferred qualifications:

    • Experience in project or program management, preferably on transportation-related projects.
    • Ability to problem solve and successfully work in a team of internal and external members to accomplish organizational goals.
    • Ability to provide technical input and strategic direction to multiple teams by coordinating across TPW divisions, City departments, stakeholders, and partner agencies.
    • Effective written and verbal communication with internal and external stakeholders, including meetings/public events.
    • P.E. or AICP , or interest in pursuing those credentials within 6 months of employment.


    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Manages and coordinates projects and activities between members of the management team, various departments, public agencies, and/or private sector representatives. Develops methods, procedures, and quality objectives including metrics for assessing progress; and utilizes established project standards, procedures, and quality objectives. Develops detailed project plans and schedules, monitors progress, analyzes information and reports, and revises the schedule, as necessary. Assists or leads, as necessary, in the management of the selection process and administers consultant services, including negotiating contract terms and fees, approving the consultant’s product, approving payment to consultant, initiating poor performance remedies, etc. Conducts project kickoff meetings, communicates roles and project expectations, and ensures project team members have the tools and training required to perform effectively. Provides work direction and leadership to assigned projects including scheduling, assignment of work, and review of project efforts. Monitors project milestones and critical dates to identify potential risk to project schedule; identifies ways to resolve schedule issues; keeps management current on any changes. Manages, monitors, and reviews contracts and contractors to ensure compliance with contractual obligations, including administering change orders and estimates. Assesses variances from the project plans; gathers metrics and develops and implements changes as necessary to ensure that the project remains within specified scope and is within time, cost, and quality objectives. Provides technical advice and assistance to City management, field personnel, contractors, etc.

    City Government
