    SUMMARY OF POSITION
    The Animal Services Bureau has an opening for a regular part-time (0.5 FTE) Veterinarian at the Animal Services Center in Salinas. Reporting to the Administrator of the Animal Services Bureau, the successful candidate will provide licensed Veterinary services to the Animal Services Center 20 hours each week to include spay/neuter surgeries, veterinary care to incoming stray animals and ongoing care for shelter animals as well provide instruction to technical support staff such as a Registered Veterinary Technician and Animal Care Technicians

    Hitchcock Road Animal Services is a Joint Power Agency between the County of Monterey and City of Salinas. The County of Monterey acts as the lead agency and all employees are hired by the County of Monterey. While protecting, promoting, and enhancing the health, safety, and quality of life for companion animals and people within Monterey County, Animal Services performs duties that include field services for the impoundment of animals roaming at large; the treatment, control, and prevention of rabies in animals; the permitting of kennels, pet shops, rooster keeping in Monterey County; as well as responding to animal nuisance and code issues such as aggressive animals, dog barking, animal bites and enforcement of local animal related ordinances. Animal services also provides animal sheltering for stray and lost animals found in the County of Monterey, City of Salinas and other contracting cities; pet licensing for dogs and cats as required by state and local ordinances; veterinary services for care of and spay/neuter of animals that are housed within the shelter; and volunteer and education services that has a robust volunteer program and provides education and community outreach to increase and promote responsible pet ownership and HRAS services.

    As of December 29th, 2023, the Health Department offers up to a $10,000 signing bonus to candidates hired into regular part-time positions for this classification from this recruitment.

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process will be used to fill current and future vacancies, both regular and temporary, as they arise.

    Examples of Duties

    • Operates a spay/neuter clinic to help reduce and control the animal population of the County.
    • Examines, diagnoses, and provides treatment to sick or injured animals.
    • Instructs and provides technical direction to clinic staff.
    • Prepares required records and reports.

    Examples of Experience/Education/Training

    THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    Thorough Knowledge of:
    • Current principles, practices, and policies of veterinary medicine.
    • Laws and regulations governing local shelter populations consisting primarily of small animals.
    • Principles and practices, of health care terminology and technology as they relate to veterinary medicine.
    • Utilization and effects of medications for animals.
    Working Knowledge of:
    • Safety policies, procedures, and practices as they relate to veterinary medicine.
    • Spay and neuter surgeries pursuant to established protocols.

    Skill and Ability to:
    • Perform full range of veterinarian duties.
    • Communicate clearly and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Perform veterinary diagnosis and treatment.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted through the course of work.
    • Prepare clear and concise written and oral reports.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    • Successfully complete a background check to include fingerprinting.
    • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
    • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
    • Pursuant to Title 16 Section 4825 of the State of California Business and Professions Code, possession of a license in active status, to practice as a veterinarian issued by the State of California Veterinary Medical Board.
    • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate/license.
