    DESCRIPTION

    The Department of Library Services has one (1) immediate opening for part-time Library Aide (Non-Career) position. Under the senior librarian's direct supervision, the incumbents will perform various routines duties in the library; including assisting patrons with questions, computers, and resources and preparing library materials for circulation. Library Aides will also assist librarians with programs and services specifically developed for youth and teens. This position requires that potential candidates speak Spanish fluently. The selected candidates will work at the Billie Jean King Main Library, located at 200 West Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802.

    Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision benefits; however, may be eligible for sick leave benefits.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Assists patrons with questions, computers, resources, and library services;
    • Provides and assists with ch ildren’s and teen library programs, such as s torytime , book clubs and summer reading programs;
    • Prepares books and library materials for circulation;
    • Sorts, files and shelves books, documents, periodicals, films, and recordings;
    • May assist with preparation, sorting, collection and delivery of mail;


    • Assists with collection maintenance and development;
    • Prepares periodic reports, including statistics for programs ; and,
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Experience equivalent to six months of full-time clerical experience involving significant amounts of alphabetical and numerical filings;
    • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, follow both verbal and written directions ;
    • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and maneuver book trucks;
    • Must be available to work evenings and weekends;
    • Valid motor vehicle operator license.


    DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS :

    • A High School Diploma;
    • One (1) year of library experience;
    • Bilingual in Spanish.
