    Job Summary

    The Office of the Dean of Students Behavioral Intervention Case Management Team serves both the University and the individual student by working in a holistic manner with students who are experiencing higher levels of distress, life challenges, or barriers, which could be interfering with their ability to be successful. Behavioral Intervention Case Managers can assess for any reports of critical incidents including complex mental and physical health problems, learning disabilities, and threats/risks to self and community. Case managers serve as a primary resource for managing reports of concerning behaviors on campus. They identify and intervene as early as possible with students whose behavior or well-being suggests the need for support services. Case managers work with complex situations to strategically manage critical incidents, prevent, and support other potential crises from escalating by advocating for, assisting, and working with students to provide them with or connect them to the appropriate resources, while considering what is best for them academically and personally. While the case managers are trained to understand basic case management duties, each case manager is trained with an eye toward the following kinds of support: Behavioral Intervention (high levels of distress, harm to self, harm to others), Residential Student Care, Threat Management, and Re-entry Coordination under the general direction of the Dean of Students. All non-clinical case managers have responsibilities in providing direct support, risk assessment, internal/external referrals, outreach/training/education, and assessment. By addressing these needs through effective case management, outreach, and support, this role helps mitigate issues, enhance overall campus safety, boost morale, and positively impact student retention. Some, but not all specific caseload/focus areas are:

    Elevated to Critical Incident Case Management Response - BI Case managers address situations defined by the NABITA rubric as elevated to critical that may include a visible incident involving University or local law enforcement, student death, victim or perpetrator of crime, victim of on or off campus accident including other campus community members, victim of natural disaster, on campus injury, or students affected by campus events or other student conduct. Case management services include but are not limited to: providing assessment, advocacy, resources and referrals as well as follow-up services for students that are experiencing significant physical, mental, psychological, and life management difficulties. In this capacity, managers work closely with key offices (University Housing Services, University Police, Counseling & Psychological Services, Faculty Affairs, Equal Opportunity and Employee Relations, Student Conduct and Ethical Development, University Personnel). Duties include providing information and training for the campus community; fielding calls, emails, and referrals regarding concerning behaviors; coordinating responses and services for individuals; maintaining the Behavioral Intervention Team database; undertaking research on national best practices; attending weekly meetings; and participating on other committees dealing with campus safety. Case managers support students struggling to function in the university system, those with current and emerging mental, psychological, or physical health issues, and students experiencing issues adjusting to academic and social life. Case managers coordinate services and provide referrals to the appropriate resources on campus including outside agencies and providers such as the Employee Assistance Program. The position also oversees a comprehensive program to identify and manage students, faculty and staff at risk. Case managers work towards minimizing the impact of mental illness or emotional distress on the safety, academic, and personal pursuits of students through effective referral and follow through.

    Behavioral Intervention Team - BIT whose membership may include University Housing Services, University Police, Counseling & Psychological Services, Faculty Affairs, Equal Opportunity and Employee Relations, Student Conduct and Ethical Development, and University Personnel. BIT provides case management services to students with complex mental and physical health problems, learning disabilities, and safety concerns that are reported to the Behavioral Intervention Team. Through the BIT, case managers working with a caseload of the BIT seek to identify and intervene as early as possible with students whose behavior suggests the need for campus support services. As a member of the BIT, Case Managers serve as a primary resource for managing reports of behavioral concerns on campus as well as responding to inquiries and providing appropriate follow-up to reports.

    Re-Entry Coordination - Provide systematic review, outreach, and assistance to students in the withdrawal, leave of absence, and reinstatement processes who might need support in creating and maintaining personal and academic goals while keeping graduation in view. Work directly with students who need additional support in the withdrawal and leave of absence processes due to unforeseen personal/home emergencies or mental/physical health situations. In this capacity the case managers work closely with key offices such as Academic Advising and Retention Services, Counseling & Psychological Services, and various college academic student success centers. Providing pivotal support and follow-up with students during their university absence to ensure they maintain on track to return with the proper internal and external supports to aid them persistence towards graduation.

    Threat Management - Case managers work in coordination with University Police Department and other key members of the Threat Management Team in assessing risk using WAVR 21 and coordination of information of appropriate resources for cases deemed to be a higher level of concern for harm to others/the greater community. The university should be aware of these individuals for monitoring, support, and intervention; they may already be managed by BIT or with outside agencies beyond university oversight..

    5150 Psychiatric Holds and Suicidal Ideation - Case managers respond to these reports by quickly gathering information about the individual’s current mental health status, recent behavior, and any potential triggers. They conduct a non-clinical assessment of current mental state and any immediate risks the student may pose to themselves or others. Within this process, case managers provide assistance, regularly monitor progress, and adjust their support as needed if setbacks occur along the student’s educational journey and while on campus. This process emphasizes a compassionate and systematic approach to crisis intervention, prioritizing safety, stabilization. Case managers work individually with the student on their wellness journey to help mitigate risk to themselves or others and increase their ability to return to campus and matriculate.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Responds to students seeking assistance for economic crisis/es as well as to inquiries from the campus community referring students for assistance.
    • Assess reports and referrals sent to Behavioral Intervention by using the NaBITA Risk Rubric Tool. Based on this assessment, case managers address moderate to critical cases by coordinating services and providing referrals to the appropriate resources on campus.
    • Provides confidential consultation for students with problems, questions and/or concerns. Helps facilitate response and assistance for individuals in crisis.
    • Works and communicates with campus offices such as Counseling & Psychological Services, University Housing Services, off-campus Counseling & Psychological Services, Accessible Education Center, Office of the Registrar, Faculty Affairs, Undergraduate Studies, Equal Opportunity and Employee Relations, University Personnel, Student Conduct & Ethical Development. Ombudsman, University and off campus police, as well as off campus clinicians and support (with an ROI on file). and community agencies to ensure appropriate support of the referred individuals as needed.
    • Serves as a liaison and advocate for enrolled students, their families, and peers. Performs general student advocacy/case management duties including, but not limited to: managing student distress, performing faculty/staff/administrative consults, and responding to parent and community inquiries.
    • Acts and advocates for the referred student as they navigate the academic, student life, and health care landscape by working with relevant on-campus and off-campus resources to ensure that student’s needs are understood.
    • Reviews updates on distressed students from team members on a weekly basis.
    • Coordinates with other campus colleagues to track and resolve referrals to the Behavioral Intervention Team.
    • Triages individuals with behavioral health, physical health, and learning concerns including hospitalizations, to facilitate and track referrals and follow up with individuals who do not respond to outreach efforts or attend appointments and/or mandated to participate in treatment.
    • Attends case management team meetings and regularly consult on cases with team members and other need-to-know individuals.
    • Ensure accurate case notes are taken and maintained in the Maxient database.
    • Represents Case Management and associated programs at university functions that require training sessions, presentations, or orientation.
    • Signs students up for CalFresh and MediCal as well as organizes large scale events to increase awareness and offer opportunities for students to sign up for programs.
    • Participates in outreach events to promote available resources.
    • Engages in outreach with students, faculty, staff and campus departments to promote awareness and understanding of Case Management and campus resources as well as how to make referrals.
    • Serves on selected department and university committees.
    • Updates websites and produces promotional materials to educate the campus community on our programs and relevant educational materials.
    • Represents Case Management and associated programs at university functions that require training sessions, presentations, or orientation.

    • Thorough knowledge of, or ability to learn CSU policies and ability to apply that knowledge to individual situations.
    • Ability to interpret and explain policies to various staff members.

    • General knowledge of University, procedures and practices related to student services and programs.

    Required Qualifications
    • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Ed/College Student Personnel, Social Work or related field.
    • Three years of professional experience in a University setting and/or case management experience.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience demonstrating excellent counseling, communication, critical thinking, negotiation, and conflict-management skills.
    • Experience working with a large diverse population in an urban setting.
    • Experience developing partnerships and collaborating with campus faculty and staff, and legal system.
    • Experience working with community resources to assist populations in need.
    • Experience working with diverse student populations.
    • Experience with complex case management and community resources.
    • Bilingual communicator; Spanish and/or Vietnamese preferred.


    Compensation

    Classification: Administrator I
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,694/month - $6,984/month
    CSU Salary Range: $4,135/month - $12,288/month

    The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
