    The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating , and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services.     Position Duties

    The Intern is expected to work 15-20 hours per week. I ntern duties include but are not limited to:

    • Process minor permits, easy major permits, and close out utility permits.


    • Input information in the permit database and conduct preliminary review of plans and permit applications.


    • Following up with internal and external customer requests as directed by supervisor.


    Salary Information:
    The Public Works Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) part-time unbenefited Undergraduate/Graduate Student Intern in the Development Services Division , Utility Permitting.

    Salary ranges for this classification are:

    • Undergraduate Student Intern: $15. 32 - $ 21.88 per hour (unbenefited)


    • Graduate Student Intern: $19. 8 2 - $2 9.27 per hour (unbenefited)


    These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    About the Development Services Division Internship:

    As a Student Intern on the Utility Permit Team within the Department of Public Works, you will gain hands-on experience in the review and processing of encroachment permits for utility companies. This team is responsible for coordinating with utility providers to ensure proposed work in the public right-of-way complies with City standards and regulations.

    You will assist with permit intake, review, and tracking, and gain exposure to the coordination process between the City and utility agencies. This position offers the opportunity to develop a practical understanding of utility infrastructure permitting and the role it plays in supporting both public and private projects within the City .

    The salary ranges for these classifications:

    Student Intern Salary Range - $15.27 - $21.66/hourly (unbenefited)

    Graduate Student Intern Salary Range - $19.62 - 28.98/hourly (unbenefited)

    This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Undergraduate Student Intern : Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.

    Graduate Student Intern : Completion of a bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a master’s degree program from an accredited college or university.

    Licenses & Certificates : Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.

    Other Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable qualifications for this position include:

    • Enrolled as an Accounting and Finance, Marketing and Business Analytics, or Civil Engineering (CE) undergraduate student in an accredited college or university.


    • Experienced in typical computer software applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.


    • Conveys information succinctly and state thoughts clearly in both verbal and written communication.


    • Able to develop working relationships with co-workers and supervisors using strategies like collaboration, open-mindedness, and conflict resolution to accomplish tasks.


    • Utilizes effective approaches to problem-solve and to determine an appropriate course of action.


    • Can manage several tasks at once. Completes quality work assignments in a timely manner .


    • Possesses strong analytical skills and proficient in math.


    Selection Process

    Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.

    Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the City’s website.
