    The Department of Public Works i s responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services.     Position Duties

    Salary range(s) for this classification is/are:

    Engineer I: $ 100,616.88 - $127,305.36 annually

    Engineer II: $ 114,070.32 - $ 144,406.08 annually

    This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    The Department of Public Work s is currently seeking to fill one (1) Engineer I/II position within the Development Services (DS) Division. Development Services (DS) provides permitting services for development projects and reviews plans and issuance of permits for the construction of utility infrastructure and encroachment on City streets. This division is also responsible for program including storm water control, flood hazard zones, geologic hazard zones, grading and erosion control, mapping, street and easement vacation, and special assessment districts, and transportation and traffic analysis.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Develop, review, and interpret plans and specifications for conformance to established standards for major City projects


    • Prepare resource and/or cost estimates


    • Perform field investigation


    • Prepare and administer consultant agreements


    • Supervise, schedule, assign and direct activities for Inspectors and/or Engineering Technicians, Student Interns, and Engineering Trainees


    • Review and make recommendations concerning proposed projects and resolve disputes between contractors, inspectors, developers, utilities, and consultants


    • Work collaboratively in a group or team environment and communicate clearly and effectively


    • Prepare a variety of correspondences and reports


    • Assists in CEQA and other permits process


    • Coordinates with contractors and/or other City departments to plan and develop City projects


    • Performs a range of work in the field of design, project management or construction project management


    • Interacts, coordinates, and provides customer service to engineers, inspectors, consultants, contractors, local agencies, citizen groups, general public , and other City Departments


    This recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions in this, or other divisions or departments. Engineer I/II positions within Public Works support work in several other divisions, including City Facilities and Architectural Services (CFAS), Engineering Services (ES), and Transportation and Hydraulic Services (THS) Divisions.     CFAS manages capital projects across a wide variety of City-owned facilities and infrastructure, including but not limited to Emergency Interim Housing facilities, Parks, Playgrounds, Trails, Libraries, Community Centers, and other various public facilities.

    ES is comprised of four sections: Construction Management Services, Structural Engineering and Code Inspection, Material Testing Laboratory, and Survey. This division provides technical support services for Capital Improvement Projects, development/utility permit projects, inspection oversight, Underground Service Alert (USA)services, land surveying, monument preservation services, field and laboratory testing, pavement design and evaluations, and building code inspection services.

    THS is responsible for the design, construction, and master plan of bridges, culverts, streets, sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewers, pump stations, streetlights, landscape and hardscape improvements, traffic signals, and supports construction and engineering, upgrade, and revitalization of the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    Engineer I: A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university or possession of an Engineering-In-Training (EIT) certificate.

    Engineer II: A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university or possession of an Engineering-In-Training (EIT) certificate AND one (1) year of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience reviewing and preparing plans, estimates, and specifications.

    Acceptable Substitution: Certificate of successful completion of the Engineer-In-Training examination issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engin e ers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists may be substituted for the required education.

    Required Licensing:

    Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license may be required .
