    This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and any future vacancies within the General Services Agency. The anticipated life of the employment list is six months.     Current vacancy is with the General Services Agency located in Visalia. The anticipated life of the list is six months.

    Typical Duties

    • Schedule and conduct tours, handle fees, and maintain order during visitor hours.
    • Perform a variety of tasks related to the operation of the Tulare County Museum.
    • Maintain, design, and build displays.
    • Serve as museum guide.
    • Solicit and accept donations of local historical value for the museum.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following.

    Education:

    • Completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.


    Education Equivalency:

    • Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade, supplemented with college level coursework in education, history, geography or related field.


    Experience:

    • Two (2) years of experience in a related field, preferably in a museum setting which included planning and working with exhibits and conducting tours.


    Experience Equivalency:

    • Three (3) years of experience performing clerical duties which included a significant amount of public contact OR three (3) years working with school age children and/or adults in an educational or recreational setting.


    Knowledge of:
    • Filing and recording keeping techniques.
    • Grant writing techniques and procedures.
    • Display, layout, design, and maintenance of museum exhibits.

    Skill/Ability to:
    • Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers.
    • Operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment.
    • Conduct historical research to maintain knowledge of local history.
    • Prepare reports, historical papers, routine correspondence and respond to requests for information.
    • Communicate with people from various educational and socioeconomic groups.
    • Handle large or unruly groups with patience, tact, courtesy and firmness.
    • Maintain museum operations.
    • Make presentations before various interest groups.
    • Handle cash receipts in a safe and proper manner.


    DESIRABLE EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

    Knowledge of:
    • Restoration methods for metals, woods and fibers.
    • Local history and items of cultural and historical value.


    Skill/Ability to:
    • Design multi-interest displays for people of various age and socioeconomic groups.
    • Perform genealogical research.
    • Solicit museum donations through the use of the news media and community contacts.
    • Plan and assign work projects for the maintenance of museum building and grounds.
    • Give oral presentations to groups.
    • Implement and maintain museum security.
    • Type 30 words per minute.

    Conditions of Employment

    Candidates selected will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, a background investigation may also be conducted, which may include a re-investigation every 10 years for some positions.
