Serves as the assistant to the Chief of Custody and/or as a shift supervisor in an adult correctional facility with the Division of Adult Institutions
Conducts inspections to ensure that Correctional Officers are on duty and attentive to their duties; maintains records of Correctional Officer’s performance/work habits
Discusses minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to the proper facility staff specialists; and promotes rehabilitation by attempting to modify offender’s social attitudes, discouraging undesirable behavior, encouraging worthwhile activities
Assumes responsibility for the operation of the facility in the absence of higher-ranking officers; assumes command during emergencies
Participates on the facility offender disciplinary committee responsible for determining disciplinary measures to be carried out in cases involving violation of division or facility rules; investigates reported infractions of rules and regulations by offenders or employees
Serves as a member of the facility classification committee; interviews new offenders, and assists in their assignment; maintains records; prepares, or supervises the preparation of a variety of reports
Directs inspections and searches of offenders, their living quarters, and other areas of the correctional facility
Exercises considerable discretion in the performance of daily tasks and in emergency situations; work is reviewed by inspections and reports; receives general administrative direction; conducts training sessions for corrections personnel; and performs other related work as assigned
A physical examination by a physician may be required before, or at the time of appointment to determine if the applicant meets the physical standards of employment established by the Missouri Department of Corrections
By assignment, a position may require possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license
Minimum Qualifications: Four or more years of experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility, of which one year must have been as a Correctional Lieutenant with the Missouri Department of Corrections; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency
All requested documents MUST be received by the closing date listed. Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:
- A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
- A $0.75 per hour maximum security stipend if you work full-time at a qualifying facility.
- A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing stipend if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.
The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years!
