    POSITION OVERVIEW

    WORKDAYS & HOURS: MON-FRI: 6:30AM - 3:30PM*

    The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD seeks an Equipment Worker (HEAVY) to join its Greenspace Management team. The potential candidate will perform the following:

    • Safely and efficiently heavy equipment operates to perform a series of manual activities and tasks and/or to transport materials, personnel and supplies to complete work assignments.
    • Operates heavy equipment and operates trucks to transport equipment, refuse and/or materials to and from work sites.
    • Operates tractors with bush hog, batwing, auger, or other attachments to assist with maintenance of park natural areas.
    • Frequently participates in natural resources management tasks, including watering trees, tree removals, tree farm maintenance.
    • Assignments will include maintaining/create trails; Cut/add swells for drainage; Install wood bollards, other assignments as assigned.
    • Performs a variety of manual tasks and activities, i.e., moving storage containers, digging tree holes, chain sawing, herbicide, moving trees, planting trees.
    • Maintains, cleans and services equipment, vehicles, and tools
    • Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials and equipment needed for assignments
    • Observes and always follows safety procedures and precautions.
    • May investigate and respond to complaints.
    • Prepares and maintains reports, forms, and records. May act as a lead of a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel.
    • Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston’s Emergency Management Policy

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    The position requires stooping, bending and/or lifting of items of up to 30 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
    Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    Six months of experience in the operation of plant or automotive equipment and attachments are required.

    LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
    Must have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) based on the type of equipment the individual is assigned to operate and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).

    PREFERENCES

    Applicants with the following attributes are highly preferred:
    • Applicants with a Pesticide license from Texas department of Agricultures
    • Applicants who can workday, Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday Shifts are highly preferred.
    • Applicants with experience using the following equipment are highly preferred:
      • Maintainer, Backhoes, 18-yard Tractor Trailer, 32-yard Tractor Trailer, Kershaw, SS1 Sprayer, Roller Asphalt Paver, Crane, Gradall, Excavator, Box Blades, Dozer, Sweepers, Rubber Tire Loaders. 12+ yard dump truck with trailer, etc .

    **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

    Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
