    The Job

    The Department of Public Health is recruiting for Public Health Epidemiologist who will review and monitor epidemiological case histories, synthesize health statistics and demographic data, to identify health and disease trends. The incumbent will be assigned to analyze large datasets, design instruments for gathering and analyzing disease or demographic data and conduct medical record chart reviews. In addition, may work with disease investigators, nurses, and other clinical staff. The Incumbent will be involved in the analysis and dissemination of programmatic surveillance data. Surveillance data collection plays a key role in evaluating the impact of programmatic prevention and care activities through the analysis of trends in diagnoses, mortality, and in the care continuum of health and disease.

    Activities supported by an Epidemiologist in this position may include:
    • Surveillance and research activities pertaining to diseases prevalence and incidence.
    • Design and conduct epidemiologic survey to support outbreak investigation and identify where an outbreak is occurring.
    • Determine how a disease is spreading by person, place, and time using descriptive epidemiology.
    • Serve as a resource and technical consultant on active or potential disease patterns and causation.
    • Design and conduct epidemiologic surveys and field studies.
    • Use survey results to assess risks of possible epidemics or communicable disease hazards.
    • Interpret and report findings on epidemiologic studies and assessment that can have public health implications.
    • Synthesize maternal, child, and adolescent health indicators.
    • Respond to data requests on health-related statistics from internal and external groups.
    • Identify disease data sources, gather, cleanup, and manipulate data for analysis.
    • Data visualization for reports, mapping, and data dashboard.
    • Performance assessment and evaluation research for clinical treatment and service provision programs.
    • Gap analysis to identify opportunities to expand and improve care services.
    • Financial analysis to project cost of care estimates for grant applications.
    • Support duties associated with needs assessment and application for capacity development grants related to identified areas.
    • Medical record review and chart abstraction.
    • Other epidemiological support for other programs as required.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation.

    Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must qualify for one of the following options:

    Option A: A Master's degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or Biostatistics.

    Option B: A Bachelor's degree in Epidemiology, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, Biostatistics, Nursing, or Public Health.

    - AND -

    Experience: Six (6) months of full-time equivalent experience performing collection, analysis, and reporting of health, epidemiological, demographic, or disease data; OR investigating communicable diseases.

    Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. (Must be attached if applicable.)

    Desired Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess a Master's Degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, or a related field. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess one (1) or more years of experience working with collection, analysis, and reporting of communicable disease data. Experience that includes performance assessment/evaluation for communicable disease programs , grant application development and, working knowledge of various database management applications software is highly desirable.
