IntroductionThe successful candidate for the Ambulance Transportation Billing Specialist role will bring a strong foundation in medical billing—specifically ambulance billing—combined with a working knowledge of healthcare compliance, regulatory protocols, and electronic medical records. They will demonstrate proficiency in interpreting patient care reports, ensuring compliance with Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) standards, and submitting accurate documentation for billing and reimbursement. An ideal candidate will also be detail-oriented, capable of analyzing complex data sets to support performance improvement and revenue optimization, and comfortable working within platforms like ImageTrend and Microsoft Office. They will possess the interpersonal and communication skills necessary to train new employees, coordinate with stakeholders, and work effectively across departments. Certification in medical billing and ambulance compliance (or willingness to obtain within designated timeframes) is essential. Candidates must show an ability to work independently while maintaining high accuracy and confidentiality, prioritize tasks efficiently, and contribute to the operational integrity and financial health of the ambulance transportation division.
Anticipated starting salary for this position may be up to mid-point depending on candidate’s experience and internal equity. The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this position is $32.28 hourly / $67,100.80 annually. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: - Associates Degree in Business, Finance or related field from an accredited educational institution.
- Two years of current ambulance/medical billing experience, OR one year of current ambulance/medical billing experience and NAAC certified as an Ambulance Coder.
- Any equivalent combination of education and/or job-related experience that meets the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements: - National Academy of Ambulance Compliance (NAAC) as a Certified Ambulance Coder (CAC) within 6 months of hire.
- Certified Medical Billing Specialist (ICD-10 and HCPC Codes) at time of hire.
- Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on division/department/service assignment.
Essential Functions- Submit accurate and complete patient care reports to the billing company for processing
- Develop and deliver training to new employees within the ambulance transportation division.
- Analyze data trends related to ambulance transportation to identify performance gaps or reporting needs.
- Assist with quality assurance by reviewing reports for adherence to protocols and billing standards.
- Ensure patient confidentiality by handling all patient-related and billing information with discretion and in compliance with HIPAA.
- Interpret and apply billing codes, policies, and regulations, including ICD-10 and HCPCS coding.
- Collaborate with external facilities to gather necessary patient information for accurate billing.
Work Environment/Physical Demands- Travel to/from meetings and to various locations.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer, telephone, calculator, copy, requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movement.
