The eligibility list established by this recruitment may also be used to fill the Assistant Public Works Superintendent position for the Roads Division. About the Position: The Department of Public Works is dedicated to sustaining health, safety, quality of life and protection of natural resources by providing and maintaining public facilities and services in partnership with the community and other public agencies for current and future residents, workers, animals, and visitors of Napa County. The Napa County Roads Division is committed to maintaining and preserving the Napa County road system so that it is safe, reliable, and accessible for all users. The Roads Division is responsible for maintaining approximately 450 miles of public roads, 79 bridges and 50 major drainage structures within the unincorporated area of the County. The Division is active in other road-related safety efforts such as vegetation management and maintenance of structures, drainage facilities, guardrails, traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings.
The Public Works Superintendent plans, coordinates, and oversees a variety of programs, projects, and initiatives related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of County roads, culverts, bridges, and waterways. This role provides leadership and direction to staff, consultants, vendors, and contractors, ensuring work is completed effectively and in compliance with standards. The Superintendent also performs a wide range of professional and administrative duties, serving as a liaison and providing high-level support to County staff, boards, committees, and external agencies.
The Assistant Public Works Superintendent will assist the Public Works Superintendent in overseeing the Road Division, with a focus on daily operations, crew scheduling, organization, and general administration. This role provides direction to multiple district road crews involved in road construction and maintenance activities, and performs a variety of field and office tasks related to road and traffic projects.
The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge with roads operations and a proven ability to effectively lead a team.
Position Requirements for the Assistant Public Works Superintendent: - Hourly Rate: $52.43 (Step 1) - $63.56 (Step 5)
- Annual Salary: $109,054.40 (Step 1) - $132,204.80 (Step 5)
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
- Experience: Eight years of experience in road construction or road maintenance work, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity OR Three years of experience in road construction or road maintenance work in a supervisory capacity in Napa County.
- Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
- License or Certificate:* Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
Position Requirements for the Public Works Superintendent: - Hourly Rate: $66.71 (Step 1) - $80.90 (Step 5)
- Annual Salary: $138,756.80 (Step 1) - $168,272.00 (Step 5)
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
- Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible road or waterway construction or maintenance experience including three years of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
- Education: Equivalent to completion of two years of college with major coursework in civil engineering, public administration, business administration or a related field. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering, public administration, business administration or a related field is preferred.
- License or Certificate:* Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
*Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e. active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.
