    Job Summary
    The Chief Power Plant Operator oversees, coordinates, and participates in the operation of an electric generating plant, the Roland C. Dansby Power Plant.

    The Roland C. Dansby Power Plant is the primary natural gas-fired resource for Bryan Texas Utilities ( BTU ). The power plant is a four-unit power plant consisting of a 110MW gas-fired steam turbine, two 48MW simple-cycle LM 6000 gas turbines and one GE frame 5 18MW gas turbine with a total capacity of 224MW. The power plant acts as a physical hedge for BTU’s power supply and is used as a peaking to intermediate resource.
    Essential Job Functions
    • Oversees, reviews, and participates in the work of plant operators taking readings and checking equipment related to plant operations.
    • Oversees the startup, operation, and shutdown of gas turbines, steam turbines, boilers, electric generators, gas compressors, and associated power plant equipment in both routine and emergency situations.
    • Assists management with providing on-the-job training, delegating and ensuring the timely completion of work, enforcing work procedures and standards, and enforcing compliance with City and departmental policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and safety standards.
    • Plans, coordinates, and participates in regulatory compliance activities to include but not limited to, air emissions, water, wastewater, NERC , ERCOT , and facility compliance programs.
    • Assists with operations and maintenance planning activities, to include developing work plans and schedules, procuring materials, and contacting contractors.
    • Prepares routine reports and maintains necessary records of power plant operations.
    • Does switching of electrical system including substation air switches.
    • Uses the radio and telephone to communicate with City workers, dispatchers, and the general public.
    • Records electrical outage data and instructs repair crews.
    • Oversees and participates in electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation maintenance tasks as assigned.
    • Oversees and participates in water production duties and water quality analysis; ensures plant chemistry program parameters are maintained.
    • Regularly inspects condition of equipment for safety, maintenance, and cleanliness; assists with the correction of and documentation of problems; reports abnormal conditions to management, including any issues involving personnel.
    • Performs special studies/projects as assigned by production management.
    • Recommends procedural changes to management to help improve employee safety and productivity.
    • Continue education in an assigned trade skills training program in electrical, mechanical, or instrumentation, as well as continuing education in power plant operations.
    • Performs related duties as required.
    • Responds regularly and promptly to work.
    Minimum Qualifications
    Required:
    • High School Diploma or GED , plus a minimum of 2 years additional training or education in area of specialization.
    • At least eight (8) years of work experience related to power plant operations or similar responsibilities.

    Preferred:
    • Previous senior, lead, or supervisory experience is preferred.

    Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may also be considered.

    Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements
    • Texas Class C driver’s license with a good driving record as measured by the City’s evaluation system.
    • Susceptible for callout or overtime due to coverage for shift vacancies due to sick leave or vacation
