    About the Department

    The San José Fire Department's (SJFD) mission is to serve the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention and response. SJFD is a high-volume, high-performance, “all hazard” fire department, responding to approximately more than 100,000 calls for service each year from 34 Fire Stations. SJFD’s service area includes a number of high-hazard occupancies, including an international airport; a general aviation reliever airport; five major hospitals (including two trauma centers, and five emergency departments); the SAP Center, home of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks (17,500 capacity); PayPal Park, home of MLS’s San Jose Earthquakes (18,000 capacity); San José State University (the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast) with a student population of 33,409; three super regional malls; approximately 100 high-rise structures; and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

    The Bureau of Administrative Services (BAS) is responsible for the SJFD's backend operations: budgeting, accounting, employee services, human relations, information technology, geographic information systems, and public records requests. It's comprised of several teams: Budget and Fiscal Management, Employee Services, Fire Information Technology, Applications, and Geographic Information Systems.

    Position Duties

    The San José Fire Department is currently recruiting to fill one (1) Analyst I/ II vacancy in the Bureau of Administrative Services Information Technology Team.

    Salary range(s) for this classification is/are:
    • Analyst I: $92,994.72 - $113,022.00
    • Analyst II: $101,468.64 - $123,330.48

    This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    The Fire Department’s Information Technology Team supports 34 fire stations and two field offices, ensuring the availability and reliability of their critical software/hardware systems. The individual hired into this job classification is responsible for analytical work in areas including, but not limited to, response times, business process evaluation, recruitment, and budget.

    This position offers an exciting opportunity for the selected candidate to play a pivotal role in Fire IT. The employee is expected to assume a lead role for analytical functions along with the application group. A high level of independence and job expertise is vital. The employee in this position should be able to identify problems, research solutions, and provide recommendations with minimal guidance or supervision.

    Key responsibilities of this position include:
    • Prepare capacity planning forecasts based on roadmap initiatives, implementation plans, and support projections.
    • Collaborate with Fire IT to effectively implement and annually update the Fire IT Master Plan and Roadmap, ensuring alignment with the current department and IT operational priorities and needs.
    • Conduct regular steering committee meetings to make informed decisions and prioritize department and bureau specific interests and needs.
    • Review and establish support standards and expectations for IT, taking into consideration the SJFD operational standards, roadmap initiatives, and identified initiatives over the next 5-year cycle.
    • Develop charters and establish project management processes for IT projects within the department.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Tasks assigned to the position necessitate an ability to maintain confidential information essential to the IT Division. Outstanding customer service skills, both on the phone and in person, are required as the duties include working with staff from Fire IT and other Fire Department divisions, other City employees, as well as members of the public. Strong skills in Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word, Excel (including Pivot Tables), and using the internet for business communications and research are required. A high level of independence and job expertise are vital. The employee in this position should be able to identify problems, research solutions, and provide recommendations with minimal guidance or supervision.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.

    Experience :
    Analyst I - No experience is required. Analyst II - Two (2) years of increasingly responsible professional staff analytic or administrative experience conducting studies, organizing and analyzing data, and preparing reports, recommendations, or conclusions for a functional area in the budget, finance, grant administration, organizational analysis, general administration, or human resources.
    Acceptable Substitution: Additional years of experience in a position comparable to the Staff Specialist with the City of San José in areas such as budget, finance, grant administration, organizational analysis, general administration or human resources may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

    Computer Skills - Experienced with business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, MS Excel, Amanda, Project Docs, and records management software.

    Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills - Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

    Analytical Thinking - Approaching a problem or situation by using a logical, systematic, sequential approach.

    Customer Service - Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently using a professional demeanor.

    Problem-Solving - Approaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue; determines the significance of the problem; collects information; uses logic and intuition to arrive at decisions or solutions to problems that achieve the desired outcome.

    Flexibility - Makes effective decisions and achieves desired results in the midst of major changes in responsibilities, work processes, timeframes, performance expectations, organizational culture, or work environment.
