The Position Correctional Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position will be located at Florence McClure Women's Correctional Center. Incumbents provide professional nursing care to inmates by identifying patient health care needs. Prepare nursing care plans. Conduct sick calls for inmates with medical complaints. Identify inmates requiring immediate medical treatment and obtain physician's orders for treatment. Provide emergency medical treatments such as CPR and first aid. Nurses document progress in the medical charts. Review charts for changes in orders and transcribe. Prepare written reports, records and summaries. Audit charts and compile statistics. Order stock medical supplies and equipment. Coordinate and participate in clinic sessions. Schedule appointments, conduct screening tests and give immunization injections.

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) License as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which was in a correctional or institutional setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or Associates degree in nursing and one year of experience. Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of employment. Probationary employees must successfully complete pre-service training (PST) provided by the department. As a condition of appointment and continuing employment, positions are subject to call-back, overtime on short notice, stand-by status, and must work various hours and/or shifts including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Special Requirements A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Some positions require a valid driver's license at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
