    ABOUT THE POSITION

    The Senior Deputy Probation Officer is the highest non-supervisory class in the Probation Officer series; the work may not differ from that of a Deputy Probation Officer but requires the ability to perform difficult assignments with a higher level of skill and independence and with a thorough knowledge of department policies and procedures; assist in department training of staff and as a lead worker may assume unit supervisory responsibilities. A Senior Deputy Probation Officer may also be assigned to manage a sub-unit program assisting in developing and overseeing policies and procedures with accountability for day-to-day program responsibilities. The Senior Deputy Probation Officer may be required to work a varied schedule, including weekends and evenings, as needed to meet coverage requirements.
    There is currently one (1) full-time, regular hire vacancy within the Probation Department. The eligible list from this recruitment will also be used to fill future vacancies (regular, fixed term, full-time, part-time, contingent) while the list remains active.

    ABOUT YOU

    The highly qualified candidate has consistently demonstrated excellence in performing technical casework duties across various programs and functions within the department. They will be a leader in assisting in the development and implementation of emerging practices in Evidence-Based Practices, Field Tactics, and safety in work procedures on a unit or division-wide basis. They have a proven track record of working collaboratively with coworkers, agency partners, clients, and the public. The ideal candidate possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, is self-motivated, and seeks ways to continually improve departmental processes and procedures to affect positive outcomes in the criminal justice system.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

    Any combination of education, training, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities listed below. A typical way to qualify is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university AND, two years of professional Probation Officer experience at Marin County’s Deputy Probation Officer II level or equivalent.

    Certificates and Licenses
    Willingness and ability to obtain a certificate in Search and Arrest Procedures as required by California State Penal Code Section 832 prior to completion of the one-year probation period.

    Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s license is required and must be maintained while employed in the classification.

    KNOWLEDGE OF
    • Human behavioral patterns, including normal behavior, criminality, drug abuse, immaturity, and pathology sufficient to identify and evaluate clients' problems and recommend appropriate treatment plans and case management methods.
    • Cultural, economic, and social factors affecting residents of the community and clients served by the Probation Department programs.
    • State laws and regulations governing probation.
    • Principles and techniques of gathering collaborative information, which assists in the preparation of comprehensive reports on clients' functioning.
    • Community resources.

    ABILITY TO
    • Identify problems, develop and assess alternative courses of action, exercise sound reasoning, and arrive at logical conclusions.
    • Deal constructively and sensitively with others encountered during the course of work.
    • Remain calm and maintain control of clients who may be violent or have a history of violent behavior.
    • Interpret and evaluate the needs, attitudes, and problems of clients from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
    • Listen attentively and consider differing viewpoints.
    • Act assertively, set limits, confront denial, and direct client behavior.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered during the performance of duties.
    • Maintain a professional distance from clients.
    • Act neutrally and impartially in carrying out duties.
    • Read, understand, and interpret complex documents in English, such as police reports and government codes and statutes.
    • Write clear and concise reports in English for records and court purposes.
    • Make clear and effective oral presentations.
    • Organize, schedule, and prioritize workload.
    • Perform basic mathematical computations.
    • Read road maps and signs.
    • Maintain accurate records and files.
    • Learn and use the departmental computer and data-processing systems.
    • Able to maintain physical control over prisoners or youth in custody.
    • Use standard office equipment including personal computers, printers, and faxes.
    • Organize material and reports for ready access and comprehension for review by others.
    • Prepare and make oral presentations to the court.
    • Ability to assist the supervisor in planning, organizing, training, directiing, and reviewing the performance of lower-level staff members.
    • Ability to assist the supervisor in evaluating program activities and recommending policy and program changes.
    • Ability to consult with staff regarding effective counseling, supervision, and case progress.
    • Ability to manage assigned sub-unit programs.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    In accordance with State law, felony law convictions or any other convictions identified in Section 1029 of the Government Code will be disqualifying.

    Section 1031 of the Government Code provides that candidates:
    • Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
    • Be 18 years of age or older by the application filing deadline date.
    • Be fingerprinted for purposes of searching of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
    • Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
    • Be a high school graduate or equivalent as defined by state law.
    • Be found free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition, including bias against race or ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, disability, or sexual orientation, that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
    • Candidates must complete and pass a physical evaluation and comprehensive psychological evaluation prior to appointment.

    California Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC), Standards and Training Commission (STC) requires candidates:
    • Pass the BSCC’s written examination, or an alternative examination as approved under Title 15 CCR, Section 132.
