DescriptionVacancy is within the Equipment Services Division of the Public Works Department. Under general supervision, performs skilled diagnostic and repair work on a variety of heavy municipal fleet vehicles at the journeyman level; to maintain emergency pumps and generators. Repairs, rebuilds, and reconditions heavy equipment such as bulldozers, snow-loaders, power sweepers, rollers, tractors, shovels, compactors, heavy trucks and other gasoline and diesel-powered heavy machinery. Diagnoses electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic disorders within a variety of heavy vehicles determining the method of repair. Performs repair or adjustment tasks, upon; electro-mechanical, mechanical and electro-hydraulic systems, air brakes, vacuum hydrovac power brakes, two- and four-cycle diesel engines, electronic ignitions, emission control systems, standard and automatic transmissions, front and rear ends, gasoline engine, differentials, carburetors, alternators, generators, as well as electrical systems; and performs other maintenance tasks. Performs emergency service calls upon disabled heavy equipment. May perform preventive maintenance and repair on flood control pumps and emergency generators. Performs simple body work on heavy equipment, including but not limited to, replacing fenders and removing dents. Inspects and road tests heavy equipment which have undergone repair or overhaul. Records labor and replacement part expenditures utilizing standardized departmental forms.

This is a 1716 union position. The hours of this position are 40 per week. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesThe examination will consist of a rating of your training and experience as contained on your application and may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The test will be designed to measure:
Working Knowledge of: - Modern theories, practices, tools and equipment of the heavy equipment mechanic's trade.
- Operating principles and mechanics of internal combustion and diesel engines, power steering, heavy equipment hydraulics, emission control systems, automotive electronics and air brakes as well as all types of transmissions.
Skill in: - The use and care of heavy shop equipment and tools.
Ability to: - Read and interpret automotive electrical diagrams, equipment blueprints, cross reference charts and parts manuals.
- Accurately diagnose equipment failures as well as promptly and reliably repair a variety of heavy equipment.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Operate a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions Work in this class may be performed in a field environment with some travel from site to site. Incumbents may work outdoors as required in all weather conditions; incumbents may be required to wear protective gear; to work with hazardous materials and power equipment; to be exposed to noise, dust, fumes, noxious odors, and gases; incumbents may be required to lift and carry items weighing 50 pounds; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and be called back to work in accordance with the current contract.
Qualifications Open to all qualified applicants who meet the following qualifications: Graduation from a standard high school, vocational school, or GED
and two (2) years of experience as an automotive and heavy trucks/equipment mechanic.

Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Driver's License
AND obtain a Class B CommercialDriver's License permit within three (3) months and a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air brake endorsement and valid medical card within nine (9) months from date of hire and maintain it thereafter. Must supply your own tools to perform repair tasks. Certification in air brake repairs, electronic diagnosis, and hydraulics strongly preferred. Shall serve a minimum of a six-month to a maximum of a twelve-month probationary period. A COPY OF YOUR LICENSE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR APPLICATION .
