DescriptionVacancy is in the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. Under direct supervision, coordinates license and permit application responsibilities, including, but not limited to, street construction and repair, pavements, curbs, sidewalks and driveways, parking lots and playgrounds. Assists Permit Division with various projects from start to finish including design, estimating, project management, inspection, and coordination with contractors. Performs construction and public works related to technical and inspection work. Coordinates and performs Public Works related inspections including, but not limited to sidewalks and curbs, roads, concrete retaining walls, installation of various utilities, demolition, sewers, drains and site work. May coordinate with developers to perform inspections and approve construction work. Assists with City programs that include road paving and repairs, crack sealing, pavement markings, and installation and replacement of sidewalks and ramps. Ensure that all relevant safety regulatory requirements are met and that all assigned personnel comply with all safety procedures and best practices. Complies plans, maps and profiles necessary to perform work and obtains needed references from engineering records; performs and checks calculations of distances, angles, curves, areas and volumes, reduces field notes, transfers them to permanent records and draws complete and detailed maps. Works with the public to receive, enter, review, and approve permit applications process and procedures.

This is a HMEA union position. This position is overtime eligible in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesThe examination will consist of a rating of your training and experience as contained in your application and may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The test will be designed to measure:
Knowledge of: - Fundamental principles of construction and engineering as applied to municipal engineering.
- State and federal laws, statutes, and regulations pertaining to construction and inspections.
- Principles, practices, tools, equipment and materials of pavement construction and building demolition
Skill in: - Mathematics as applied to surveying and related operations.
- Microsoft Suite applications.
Ability To: - Read and interpret plans, specifications, maps, drawing, contracts, and work orders.
- Maintain construction records and prepare inspection reports.
- Interpret and explain the City's ordinances as it relates to the Department of Public Works and construction.
- Learn new software applications needed to process and review permit applications and information.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, representatives from other agencies, developers, officials and the public.
- Perform detailed technical inspections and enforce regulations firmly, tactfully, and objectively.
Qualifications Open to all qualified applicants who meet the following qualifications:
Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school and two (2) years of experience performing inspection duties on construction and demolition projects and some experience in the construction industry.

Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess a
VALID Driver's License

If selected, you will be required to pass a physical examination administered by a city physician, a drug and alcohol screening, and a background check. If appointed, you will serve 12 months of probation. This examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, and municipal laws, rules and regulations.
