ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Houston Public Library (HPL) is seeking an Administrative Coordinator to join the Mayor’s Office of Adult Literacy, part of the Houston Public Library. The Administrative Coordinator will serve as the project manager for the office to administer Houston’s Adult Literacy Blueprint ( HoustonsAdultLiteracyBlueprint.pdf ). The selected candidate should be politically savvy, perform accurate and detailed work and the ability to work with executives, HPL literacy partners and stakeholders, and all levels of staff.
Employee must be willing to work a flexible work schedule between Monday - Sunday, that may i nclude possible evenings, occasional weekends and late hours. The essential functions of the Administrative Coordinator (Mayors Office of Adult Literacy):- Under the direction of the Administration Manager of the Mayor’s Office of Adult Literacy (MOAL), coordinates with adult literacy providers in Houston to create and maintain a comprehensive system of adult literacy programming, services and resources.
- Plans, initiates, and implements adult literacy programs and services for adult literacy providers in cooperation with Houston Public Library.
- Must be able to assess process improvement and make recommendations for improvement or change as necessary or appropriate.
- Researches, analyzes, reviews, collaborates with staff and stakeholders.
- Design, develop, and implement a common data and learning management system for adult literacy across literacy providers with input from stakeholders.
- Performs other duties as assigned including handling issues and information of a highly sensitive nature.
- May prepare speeches and/or remarks for MOAL; assist with news releases and public relations; responds to the press, officials, clients, and the public on more sensitive department issues.
- Work towards highlighting MOAL and HPL’s accomplishments and visibility and attending at literacy and library meetings and conferences.
- May supervise, guide, train, or evaluate providers on best practices.

https://houstonlibrary.org/all-locations WORKING CONDITIONS: The position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions. Requires the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within low tolerance demands with no real speed requirements.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Liberal Arts of a related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: (5) Five years administrative experience are required.
Professional administrative experience may be substituted for the above education requirement on a year-for-year basis. PREFERENCES- Experience working in government or non-profits
- Experience with Adult Literacy including knowledge of best practices from literacy providers
- Experience with data collection and analysis
- Experience working with elected officials.
- A specialization and/or certificate in Adult Literacy.
- Validate driver's licenses.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
