The position of Building Inspector III is eligible for Recruitment and Retention Pay of $588.75 per month.

The salary range including Recruitment & Retention Pay is $68,029.80 - $89,058.60

The Building Services Division of the Department of Sustainable Development is seeking a Building Inspector III.  This is responsible administrative work planning, scheduling and assigning daily construction inspections, field inspection work securing compliance with City of Fort Lauderdale Ordinances, the Florida Building Code, and other County, State and Federal regulations, and structural plans review and examination work to determine whether plans, specifications, and materials conform to legally established requirements.
An employee in this class is responsible for assisting in planning, organizing, and directing a coordinated building inspection program.  The employee develops and updates programs, policies, work methods, and procedures necessary for the effective and efficient operation of construction inspections.  The employee in this class will inspect buildings and other structures, land use and land or building development or modification for structural conformance and for conformity with zoning rules and regulations effective in the City.  The employee also reviews in detail plans and specifications of proposed building construction prior to the issuance of building permits.  An employee in this class works under the direction of an administrative superior and must exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in the performance of work assignments.  Work is reviewed through periodic conferences, reports, and direct observation of results achieved.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union 769 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769.

THE REQUIREMENTS:
 1.  Have graduated from a standard high school or vocational school or possess a G.E.D. certificate from a recognized issuing agency.

2.  Have ten (10) years of experience as a licensed General Contractor, five (5) years of which shall have been in the field within the jurisdiction of the Florida Building Code, Broward Edition, and includes two (2) years as a building inspector for a municipality, or other appropriate qualification as outlined in the Code.

3.  Possess a current Certificate of Competency as a General Contractor issued by an agency approved by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals.4.  Possess a current Building Plans Examiner license from the State of Florida

5.  Possess a Florida driver's license.
 NOTE:  Required certifications/licenses must be kept current to continue employment in this class.

THE EXAMINATION AND HOW TO APPLY:

Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method.  Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify.  All successful applicants may be required to take a medical examination and/or pass a drug screening prior to appointment.

An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes.  To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J204) at time of application.
