The Position
Bargaining Unit: Local 856 - Health Services Unit
The Contra Costa County Health Services Department is seeking to fill full time Ultrasound Technologist II positions located in the Diagnostic Imaging Unit at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez, CA.
The Ultrasound Technologist II is responsible for assessing general patient condition, selecting ultrasound and ancillary equipment to use, performing a variety of routine and complex ultrasound imaging procedures including pulse and continuous-wave Doppler assessments, and assisting physicians in ultrasound procedures performed on outpatient, inpatient, and emergency patients. Other responsibilities include on-call and callback duties to perform emergency ultrasound imaging procedures that may be ordered after normal business hours which includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record demonstrating the following:
  • Experience performing general and advanced ultrasound imaging procedures
  • Excellent knowledge of anatomy, physiology and congenital/ acquired pathology as related to the use and interpretation of ultrasound diagnostic procedures and attention to detail
  • Ability to assess general patient condition and take action consistent with standards

Training and Experience: November 28, 2017; and periodically

Typical Tasks
  • Consults with referring Physician regarding patient's medical history to determine the type of ultrasonic procedure required and to correlate the clinical history with the test to be performed
  • Performs diagnostic imaging in the modality of Diagnostic Medical Sonography including ultrasound of the abdomen, spleen, liver, renal, pancreas, gallbladder and any other retroperitoneal, thyroid, break, testicles, neonatal, biophysical profiles, carotid Doppler, vascular Doppler, and pelvic and obstetrical examinations
  • Performs pulse and continuous-wave Doppler assessments
  • Operates a variety of ultrasound equipment; applies high frequency ultrasonic waves to patients through the use of transducers to produce images of internal organs for diagnostic interpretation
  • Selects ultrasound and ancillary equipment, and ensures its proper functioning for use in ultrasound setup according to specifications/protocol of examination
  • Adjusts equipment controls according to protocol and Radiologist orders for the part of the body to be examined
  • Assesses general patient condition (including stability, pain and safety) and takes appropriate action as necessary
  • Explains examination process to the patient; instructs and assists patient throughout the procedure
  • Transports patients using gurneys, wheelchairs, and/or beds; transfers patients to and from the examination table
  • Documents observations made during the procedure for final interpretation by the Radiologist
  • Participates in departmental Quality Improvement efforts
  • Labels permanent records of scans or identifies images, manipulates and sends images via the Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) network
  • Sets up sterile and non-sterile trays, and provides instruments, medical devices and supplies as requested
  • Cleans and stocks instruments in procedure rooms and ancillary areas, and maintains proper inventory levels
  • Assists in scheduling procedures and patients; receives and assists patients and other customers
  • Answers departmental telephone calls
  • May be assigned to coordinate patient flow
  • Maintains accurate records as directed
  • Perform first aid as necessary
  • Accurately bills for additional equipment or medical supplies required to perform procedures
  • Performs other related work as required

When assigned as a lead worker, additional tasks may include:
  • May be assigned lead duties in a designated area and/or shift including coordinating the quality control testing of equipment and related recording
  • Coordinates and trains students and new ultrasound technologists
  • Researches and resolves image errors
  • Maintains and orders inventory supplies
  • Serves as a resource to staff learning new skills or equipment
  • Assists in the preparation of work and on-call schedules; prioritizes and assigns tasks to technologists and support staff including rotation and unit workflow relative to available resources

Minimum Qualifications
Certificates Required: Possession and maintenance of a valid certificate as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography; and a valid certificate in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) issued by the American Red Cross or a valid certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association.

Experience: One (1) year of full-time, or its equivalent, experience as a Certified RDMS with at least six (6) months experience in an acute care setting.

Other Requirements: A background investigation/fingerprint and/or physical exam may be required prior to the start of employment.
A COMPLETED SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE AND CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED.

Selection Process

3. Training and Experience Evaluation: Consists of an evaluation of each candidate's relevant education, training and/or experience as presented on the application and supplemental questionnaire. (Weighted 100%)
4. Candidates must receive a score of at least 70, which may be an adjusted score in order to be ranked on the employment list.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices. As part of the application process, an applicant may be required to complete a Conviction History form. The Conviction History form should only be submitted when requested.
