DEFINITION
Designs, plans and coordinates the installation of modification of the electronic communication system and related components in the Sheriff's Department.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
The position allocable to this class is assigned to the Sheriff's Department and is characterized by responsibility for assisting the department in developing, expanding and maintaining a sophisticated electronic communications system. This position performs without benefit of technical supervision and utilizes professional engineering expertise to develop solutions to communication problems which may be presented in general or theoretical, rather than specific terms.

Essential Job Functions
Conducts engineering studies to evaluate the Sheriff Department's communication needs in order to recommend the adoption of new electronic devices and equipment or modify existing equipment and systems to meet changing communication and data transmission demands.

Consults with other engineers, architects, and personnel from the Communications Department to arrange for the installation, maintenance and repair of communications and other types of electronic equipment.

Reviews schematic diagrams and building blueprints to make recommendations regarding the installation of radio, paging, recording and other electronic equipment.

Conducts engineering studies to determine possible solutions based upon engineering expertise and experience.

Designs, plans and implements modifications of existing communication equipment to meet emergency operational needs.

Directs the work of communication technicians assigned to the Sheriff's Department during emergency operations.

Meets with representatives of Federal, State and local agencies to resolve operational interference and related communication problems.

Observes and monitors the use of communications equipment to insure that proper maintenance procedures are followed and F.C.C. regulations are observed.

Consults with specialized investigative units to advise and make recommendations on equipment acquisition as well as the training required to operate sensitive electronic equipment.

Attends meetings as a member of the California Public Safety Radio Association and other law enforcement communications organizations.

Writes technical specifications for equipment and prepares budget requests reflecting present and projected needs of the Sheriff's communication system.
Requirements

SELECTIONREQUIREMENTS
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree* in Electrical EngineeringANDFour (4) years of engineering experience in the planning and design of electronic communications systems.For applicants having California State Registration as an Engineer-In-Training, two (2) years of the required experience will be accepted for each year of college.

LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class II -Light: Light Physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Credit will be given to applicants, who possessDESIRABLEqualifications and indicate so on their employment application at the time of filing .

A Master's degree* or higher with specialization in Electrical Engineeringfrom an accredited collegeor university.

Applicants with a Professional Engineer's license**

Current membership in any professional public safety radio association such as California Public-Safety Radio Association (CPRA), Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCOInternational).**

EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of two (2) parts.

PART I
Anevaluation of training and experience based on application information and desirable qualifications weighted 30%.

PART II
An interview covering training, experience, and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 70%. As part of the interview, candidates will also be required to complete a brief writing exercise.Candidates who do not submit a writing sample will be disqualified from this examination.

CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON EACH WEIGHTED PART OF THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on criminal probation.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a"zero tolerance"policy for its employees for the following:
