Job Description Summary
Jefferson County’s Innovation Team is seeking an intern for Fall 2025 to join our Digital Transformation & Innovation Internship Program. This opportunity will focus on a Mapping Accessibility project that combines geospatial technology, digital accessibility compliance, and modern web mapping design.
About Our Innovation Internship Program
Jefferson County’s Innovation Team hosts a cohort of motivated interns
throughout the year . Our interns research, evaluate, design, and implement new
technologies that transform government services. You will work on meaningful projects, build business cases, and prototype solutions, while gaining hands-on experience in innovation, digital transformation, and collaboration with government technology leaders.
About the Fall 2025 Project: Mapping Accessibility
Jefferson County is undertaking a major initiative to ensure that all digital content and technology meet accessibility standards, as required by Colorado House Bill 21-1110 (HB21-1110). At the same time, our GIS team is redesigning the jMap Gallery applications-a suite of interactive mapping tools-to align with current geospatial technologies.
This project will give you the opportunity to:- Explore accessibility requirements for interactive web maps, focusing on usability for people with disabilities.
- Research trends in geospatial visualization techniques that support accessibility.
- Prototype accessible web map designs using ArcGIS tools and Jefferson County’s foundational datasets.
- Document and present recommendations for implementing accessibility within the existing ArcGIS Enterprise environment.
By the end of the semester, you will present your findings and design concepts to BIT leadership, contributing to Jefferson County’s Digital Accessibility Project and shaping the future of our GIS applications.
About the Innovation Team
The Innovation Team, part of Jefferson County’s Business Innovation and Technology Department, champions new and inventive ways of delivering services to the public. We lead projects in process improvement, technology evaluation, and service modernization to make government more efficient, innovative, and accessible.
SCHEDULE:- Fall 2025 Internship Term: September - December
- Hours: 15-25 Hours/week
COMPENSATION:
Anticipated Hiring Salary: $20 USD Hourly
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:- Study HB21-1110 accessibility requirements and best practices in digital mapping.
- Research and evaluate design techniques for multi-layer interactive web maps that improve accessibility.
- Create initial prototypes using ArcGIS Pro (desktop) and ArcGIS Enterprise Portal tools.
- Deliver a final presentation of findings, solutions, and feasibility within the county’s GIS framework

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities :
We’re looking for a motivated problem-solver who is passionate about GIS,
accessibility, and digital transformation.- Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program (GIS, Geography, Computer Science, UX/UI Design, or related field).
- Familiarity with ArcGIS tools (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online/Enterprise).
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Interest in inclusive design and accessibility in technology.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Growth mindset and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
